As countries around the world cope with the peril of COVID- 19, the 80 million people of Iran face additional dangers created by the American sanctions on their country. In the same week that China and the United Kingdom called for an easing of sanctions, on March 18 the Trump Administration increased them.
Researchers are predicting that if sanctions are not lifted, at least 3.5 million Iranian lives will be lost.
According to October 2019 Human Rights Watch report, the U.S. “maximum pressure” campaign had “drastically constrained the ability of Iranian entities to finance humanitarian imports, including vital medicines and medical equipment.”At this crucial moment, the perpetuation of the sanctions is making a disastrous situation even worse.
What Can We Do?
There is now a letter circulating among members of Congress calling upon Secretary Pompeo and Secretary Mnuchin to substantially suspend the sanctions on Iran so that the country is better able to combat the virus. Call your Representative and Senators at the Congressional Switchboard ( 1-202-224-3121) or at their district/regional offices. If all else fails, send an email. TIME SENSITIVE
Contact the US Treasury Department and ask that the sanctions on Iran be lifted.
